We are delighted to launch the EIGHTH annual World Bookmark Day 25 February 2024 - WORLD BOOKMARK DAY (WOBODA) We celebrate the readers' little helper and the ever faithful companion of books for 2000 years. Do you like, collect or produce bookmarks? Join us to spread the word about this worldwide event! We continue to celebrate World Bookmark Day to bring attention to bookmarks, the quiet companion of readers. Friends who love to use bookmarks while reading, friends who love to collect bookmarks, illustrate and produce bookmarks, who write blogs, articles, and books on bookmarks, friends who take care of them in libraries and museums, and some other unknown friends. Join us in our activities if you think you are a friend of bookmarks. The WOBODA is an excellent occasion to help bookmarks get the recognition they deserve. You like and collect bookmarks? Here you can win a huge lot of bookmarks from all over the world! For each 10 bookmarks you pledge to send, you'll get a raffle ticket. So, you are free to choose how many bookmarks you wish to send. Of course, your chances to win are higher the more tickets you have. On the World Bookmark Day - 25 February 2024 - the winner will be drawn by lot and he or she will get all the accumulated bookmarks. 4. LOCAL EVENTS: Organize a Display and/or Bookmark Swap in Your Local Library or Bookstore

Just ask your local library to help celebrate World Bookmark Day!
As far as we know, only few libraries have organised bookmark swaps yet, and in most cases the initiative came from collectors. However, libraries are generally interested in hosting events and thus they are likely to be receptive for the idea of a bookmark swap or a display in their rooms. Offer to help in organizing the event and see what happens. It can be an exciting experience for you to discover other collectors in your area on this occasion. You can write us about a successful attempt, and we'll report about it here, if you wish also with some pictures. Such a swap report might encourage other collectors to try it as well. We are curious to hear from you. Please contact our webmaster for questions and submissions. |
You can also ask libraries or bookstores if they would display bookmarks for World Bookmark Day. You could print some of the designs on this page, make posters of copies of some in your own collection or use bookmarks from the library or bookstore. There are many possibilities!

Exhibition on the Genesis of the Bookmark by Domènec and Montse (Mondopunts) with Emilia and Lluis (La Bruixa of Punt), at IU BOHIGAS library in Salt,
|
On February 15, on the occasion of the upcoming celebration of World Bookmark Day, at the IU BOHIGAS library in Salt, a small exhibition on the Genesis of the Bookmark was inaugurated by Domènec and Montse (Mondopunts) and in collaboration with Emilia and Lluis (La Bruixa of Punt).
The exhibition consists of two display cases where Domènec exposes and explains the origins of the bookmark; student of the subject that he is, he shows us reproductions of bookmarks where the medieval ones are among the first known, going through the handcrafted ones in the time of papyrus, parchment and those made of animal skin until reaching the invention of the printing press. We can also see different bookmarks made with paper and craft techniques of religious origin and some with silk ribbons that were used in religious and liturgy books. The exhibition ends with a sample of bookmarks where you can see the different names used to name what we know today as BOOKMARKS. This exhibition can be visited from February 14 to March 9, 2024. |

5. Vilija Jociené, Lithuania: sends this description of the event at her library: The bookmark is the best friend of books. Many people like to have a special bookmark that travels from book to book together. In the Kaunatava library (Telšiau district, Lithuania), we invited you to make a book mark with memories. When coming to the class, you had to bring a small trinket that is sweet to you and full of beautiful emotions - your mother's brooch, a stone with a hole brought back from a trip, one earring left over, or a toy that reminds you of your childhood... During the class, we combined them into a bookmark, so now while reading a beautiful book you will still feel fond memories of the book. This is how we joined the International Book Tab Day celebrated on February 25.

6. Anne Supsic, Pennsylvania, USA: Our newest member, Anne Supsic, will give a presentation on 25 February at the Moravian Museum in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. She will talk about the origins of World Bookmark Day, the history of bookmarks and display some of her favorite bookmarks in her collection. She has also written a book titled The Bookmark about a bookmark with a secret that may reveal a forgotten romance between the Marquis de Lafayette and a Moravian sister from Bethlehem, PA.

This award, named in honor of our founder, Asim Maner, recognizes the person who has done an outstanding job of promoting bookmarks, either for World Bookmark Day or in general activities. Tell us what you have done, send photos of the activities, and describe the impact it has had, in your opinion. You may also submit comments from other people who are familiar with your work. The winner will be chosen by the IFOB co-editors and possibly last year's winner of the Woboda raffle. Submit your entry by February 20, 2024 to the webmaster.
