4.  LOCAL EVENTS:  Organize a Display and/or Bookmark Swap in Your Local Library or Bookstore
Picture
Display at Bookmark Bookstore, Oakland, California, 2018
Just ask your local library to help celebrate World Bookmark Day!
As far as we know, only few libraries have organised bookmark swaps yet, and in most cases the initiative came from collectors. However, libraries are generally interested in hosting events and thus they are likely to be receptive for the idea of a bookmark swap or a display in their rooms. Offer to help in organizing the event and see what happens. It can be an exciting experience for you to discover other collectors in your area on this occasion. You can write us about a successful attempt, and we'll report about it here, if you wish also with some pictures. Such a swap report might encourage other collectors to try it as well. We are curious to hear from you. Please contact our webmaster for questions and submissions.
You can also ask libraries or bookstores if they would display bookmarks for World Bookmark Day.  You could print some of the designs on this page, make posters of copies of some in your own collection or use bookmarks from the library or bookstore.  There are many possibilities!

Another option:  Try to get an article published in a local magazine or newspaper.

Exhibition on the Genesis of the Bookmark by Domènec and Montse (Mondopunts) with Emilia and Lluis (La Bruixa of Punt), at IU BOHIGAS library in Salt,
Picture
On February 15, on the occasion of the upcoming celebration of World Bookmark Day, at the IU BOHIGAS library in Salt, a small exhibition on the Genesis of the Bookmark was inaugurated by Domènec and Montse (Mondopunts) and in collaboration with Emilia and Lluis (La Bruixa of Punt).

The exhibition consists of two display cases where Domènec exposes and explains the origins of the bookmark; student of the subject that he is, he shows us reproductions of bookmarks where the medieval ones are among the first known, going through the handcrafted ones in the time of papyrus, parchment and those made of animal skin until reaching the invention of the printing press. We can also see different bookmarks made with paper and craft techniques of religious origin and some with silk ribbons that were used in religious and liturgy books.

The exhibition ends with a sample of bookmarks where you can see the different names used to name what we know today as BOOKMARKS.

This exhibition can be visited from February 14 to March 9, 2024.
2.  Marcin Gałązka, owner of bookstore Antykwariat Zakładka, Warszawa, Poland is planning several activities for Woboda.
  • The bookmark design above is being given away in the store.
  • Each purchased book will have 5 bookmarks for free, instead of the usual one, during the week of February 25 - March 2
  • Bookmark competition:  Projects can be submitted until February 12. Announcement of the competition results on February 25.
  • Photo challenge: Take a photo of yourself with your favorite bookmark and post it on social media with the hashtags #mojazakładka (it means #mybookmark) #worldbookmarkday
  • See the Facebook event for details.
3. Scott Paulson, Exhibits and Events Coordinator, University of California, San Diego Library, has organized the following:
  • Bookmarks: The Constant Companion of Books for Over 2,000 Years Exhibit:  February 5-29, Geisel Library
    • At first, in this year's display, we'll mostly show our favorite Black History Month bookmarks (we have an excellent collection!)
    • And later, we'll add in the soon-to-arrive bookmarks made by the young students at the UC San Diego Preuss School!
    • Throughout the run of the display, we'll also feature  perennial favorite bookmarks of the staff at UC San Diego Library from past exhibit years.

4. Gintautas Deksnys, Kaunas, Lithuania: a creative installation "Mintys"  including a part of his bookmarks collection, to celebrate World Bookmark Day.
Picture
5. Vilija Jociené, Lithuania:  sends this description of the event at her library: The bookmark is the best friend of books. Many people like to have a special bookmark that travels from book to book together. In the Kaunatava library (Telšiau district, Lithuania), we invited you to make a book mark with memories. When coming to the class, you had to bring a small trinket that is sweet to you and full of beautiful emotions - your mother's brooch, a stone with a hole brought back from a trip, one earring left over, or a toy that reminds you of your childhood... During the class, we combined them into a bookmark, so now while reading a beautiful book you will still feel fond memories of the book. This is how we joined the International Book Tab Day celebrated on February 25.

6. Anne Supsic, Pennsylvania, USA:  Our newest member, Anne Supsic, will give a presentation on 25 February at  the Moravian Museum in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. She will talk about the origins of World Bookmark Day, the history of bookmarks and display some of her favorite bookmarks in her collection. She has also written  a book titled The Bookmark about a bookmark with a secret  that may reveal a forgotten romance  between the Marquis de Lafayette and a Moravian sister from Bethlehem, PA.

7. Ana Matos, Portugal:  left some paper bookmarks, editorial, on a little public cabin at the park where people trade books (take, read and return it - similar to Little Free Libraries) ,and on the back side left the website and celebration date; also left 2 handmade bookmarks to anyone that would enjoy.  24 February 2024

Further information about bookmarks and the World Bookmark Day

You may be surprised to hear that bookmarks have accompanied books for 2000 years. This is brand new information unveiled by the research work done by members of our community, the International Friends of Bookmarks (IFOB). Details are given in the report Earliest History of Bookmarks. Before this publication, it was thought that the earliest bookmarks were used in medieval ages in European monasteries.

There was a discussion about pros and cons of launching a World Bookmark Day in our community. As a result, we started this project on 23 April 2016. Details of Woboda activities can be found on our Blog: please click the category "World Bookmark Day"
