Book Arts Newsletter:  Every four-six weeks, The Book Arts Newsletter is published at the Center For Fine Print Research at the University of the West of England, edited by Sarah Bodman.  It lists many events related to books and art including bookmark exhibits, contests and other activities.  

WORLD BOOKMARK DAY (Woboda) - 25 February
The World Bookmark Day shall be celebrated on 25 February each year. The first time  was launched by International Friends of Bookmarks (IFOB) in March 2016 and held on 25 February 2017. The annual event is accompanied by a series of activities that can be seen on the Woboda page on this website.

TBS Swapmeets
These meetings  in the fall and spring are for the members of The Bookmark Society (TBS) in England. They usually have a specific theme and all held in various cities in England. If you would like to enquire about joining The Bookmark Society, please contact [email protected] 

Exhibitions

Bookmark Exhibition LeseZEICHEN - by Rosemarie Abel - March 15 - September 30, 2016
Our member Rosemarie Abel shows over 300 bookmarks from all over the world on the current bookmark exhibition hosted by the largest children museum in Germany, Explorado Kindermuseum in Duisburg..
       In der Ausstellung "LeseZEICHEN" präsentiert das Explorado Kindermuseum in Duisburg Lesezeichen aus der ganzen Welt. Zu sehen sind über 300 Lesezeichen aus der privaten Sammlung der Duisburgerin Rosemarie Abel.

Competitions

Contest - A Bookmark for the Library
The Public Library of San Michele Mondovi (Cuneo), Italy, since 2009 has held a contest in which prizes in books are awarded to the best bookmarks built around the topic of the year.  This contest is open to participants from all over the world who will compete in the various categories together with the national participants. A special prize worth € 100 is reserved exclusively to works from foreign countries (last years won the prize a participant from Madagascar, France, Philippines…!).  Entries are due in May. 
Bookmark Contest organized by Monroe Street Books
Monroe Street Books has a monthly contest for bookmark designs.  Win a $100.00 gift certificate for our store. To win: Design an original bookmark judged the best of the month by the Monroe Street Staff. It’s a year-long contest meaning 12 months, 12 winners. Open to all ages.  The first few months' winners are on our facebook page if you care to look.     
Contest - My most interesting bookmark ❤️
Contest ran in February 2017 on Instagram, Pinterest and on the IFOB website. Participants can upload a picture of their most interesting bookmark and tell why they think the bookmark presented is so special. The winner was elected on 25 February 2017, the celebration day of the very first World Bookmark Day.  See news from 2016-2017 for entries and winner. 
Competition - Write an article about the World Bookmark Day and win the 'Excellence Award'

Projects

.University of the West of England, Bristol, England - The Bookmarks Project
The Bookmarks Project of the university aims to encourage appreciation of work in the format of the artist's book. Participating artists each produce an edition of 100 signed and numbered bookmarks to give away through distribution boxes at venues around the world. Over the last fourteen years, the Bookmarks series of free artwork distribution has visited 148 galleries, bookstores, workshops, centres, schools and libraries in several countries.  Bookmarks XV Infiltrating the Library System September 2017 – February 2018 will be the fifteenth and final outing.

ISLM Bookmark Project
​
The ISLM (International Association of School Librarianship) Bookmark Project involves matched schools making homemade bookmarks (any style, shape, etc - be creative) to exchange with each other. The recurring project will take place in 2016 as well. Interested? Read more here.

International Fair of Collectables - Villanueva de la Serena, Spain
Bloomsbury Ephemera Fair 
Etc Fairs’ monthly London Ephemera Fairs are held at the Royal National Hotel, Bloomsbury, and run throughout the year. As usual expect a fantastic mix of dealers in books, ephemera, maps, prints and postcards.
Collectables' & Ephemera Fair 
​Organised twice a year by the Ephemera Society of Australia Inc.

Book Fairs

Fairs are held every year unless otherwise noted.  Click links for latest information. 
Foire du Livre de Bruxelles / Brussels Book Fair 
Very recommendable for bookmark collectors is a visit at the booth of Éditions Apeiron, a publishing house from France which produces quasi handmade art books in leporello (fold-out book) format. There you can get beautiful bookmarks illustrated by the artists working for the publishing house. Many thanks to our member Sylvia Thiteux for providing this information.
Vilnius Book Fair (Lithuania) 
The International Vilnius Book Fair is the well-known cultural activity in Lithuania and the biggest and most important book fair in the Baltic countries. Each year over 300 publishers, book traders, etc take part in the Vilnius Book Fair, the event is attended by more than 60.000 visitors.
Latvian Book Fair 
The Latvian Book Fair is held annually in Riga, Latvia. The book fair 2015 gathered 52 participants and was attended by 15,228 visitors.
Livre Paris (Salon du Livre de Paris) - Paris Book Fair 
The name of the fair has been changed to the short formula Livre Paris, a new visual identity has been created. There are special themes each year. 
Les Amis du Livre et des Vieux Papiers de Melun
​This organization has held book fairs in Melun since 1997.  They produce a series of bookmarks each year, usually forming a puzzle.

Foire du Livre Saint Louis - Book Fair Saint Louis 
This small book fair in the French town Saint Louis, located in the border triangle between France, Switzerland, and Germany, is an interesting place to visit for bookmark collectors as many book illustrators and comic book artists are present on different days and they sell or give out for free some of their products, among them the occasional bookmark. They may also illustrate a bookmark upon request. 
Frankfurt Book Fair 
The Frankfurt Book Fair is the world's largest event of the publishing industry. The exhibiting publishers present every year a vast quantity of free advertising bookmarks, very popular by collectors. The fair is only open for public on Saturday & Sunday, the previous days are reserved for professionals.  
Walfer Bicherding Book Fair 
This annual fair is the largest in the region and one of the most important cultural events in the Grand Duchy.
Other European Book Fairs & Comic/Manga Festivals
The page lists the dates of book events in several European countries.
California International Antiquarian Book Fair
Held ever February and one of the largest of its kind with vendors from all over the world. And their logo features a bookmark!
