Pat Crepeau contacted us with a generous offer of her collection of 67 bookmarks.  Pat  had been collecting since childhood, and says,  "When I got a bookmark, I just put it in the box I kept them in, and let them build up. Every once in a while I would look at them. I never used them, because when I’m reading I have a different system." Now she is decluttering and wanted to find a good home for these bookmarks.  Thanks, Pat!  8 November 2022

🎁🎁🎁   The winning ticket number is 53! - This ticket belongs to the winner of the World Bookmark Day Raffle 2023    🎁🎁🎁
The winner is Olav Claassen . Congratulations!

The second place winner receives:
  • the bookmarks submitted by the winner to prevent the winner from getting his/her own bookmarks back.
  • Regina Mačiulytė, Lithuania, has also donated 30 bookmarks from the Vilnius Book Fair, held February 23-26.
  • Gaby Dondlinger, Luxumbourg, has donated one of her tiny book creations.  See under Asim Maner award for choices.
The second place winner is the participant next to the winner, as declared before.. This means:
🎁    The Second Place Winner of the Raffle is Vilija Jocienė, Lithuania!   🎁

The process for determining the winner of the raffle
All participants will be asked for an individual number between 1 and 99. Whereas all participants know their own number, they don't know the numbers of the other participants. At the end we will sum up all the individual numbers of the participants and will have a sum number. Let say that sum is 348. We have a certain number of raffle tickets at the end and each participant owns a part of the raffle tickets.

Here's an example to illustrate: let's say we have 8 participants and they have together 37 raffle tickets. The number of the winning ticket will be calculated by the following formula:
t = 348 / 37 = 9.40541 - 9 = 0.40541 x 37 = 15    The ticket numbers are given in the order of the participants' joining date. In our case, participant 1 has two tickets, no 1 and 2, participant 2 has 3 ticket (ticket number 3, 4, and 5), participant 3 has 2 tickets (ticket number 6 and 7) etc. There is only one exception in the calculation: if the calculation gives 0 that means the highest ticket number, in our case ticket number 51.

Well, this sounds rather complicated, however, it is completely verifiable and there is no chance of manipulating it by anybody. The lot is drawn by the participants themselves so to speak! All new participants should send along a photograph their bookmarks also an individual number between 1 and 99.

In order to prevent the winner from getting back his/her own bookmarks, the bookmarks of the winner will be given to a second winner. The second winner is the participant next to the winner according to the joining date (in this case we made it easy as the winning ticket is already determined). In case the winner is the last joining participant, the second winner is then the the first participant according to this logic.

Shipping and Mailing: The shipping costs for sending the bookmarks to the winner  are covered by you, and we are not liable if your bookmarks get lost in the mail. We recommend that you send them with a record or tracking of the shipment.
Shipping address for your bookmarks:   IFOB Raffle, [winner to be announced 25 February 2023]
Remember to enclose your name and email address when you send your bookmarks.

3.  MAKE A PICTURE SHOWING A WOBODA BOOKMARK AT A REMARKABLE PLACE
First, download your favourite free printable bookmark from above or produce your own WOBODA bookmark. Then, take the bookmark with you to various places you go. Take pictures of your Woboda bookmark at remarkable places and send them to us to display them here on this page. That's all you need. Join us to make WOBODA known throughout the world, thank you!

We are curious to see at which cool places WOBODA bookmarks will pop up. - Contact our webmaster if you wish to send your picture (jpg files only): do not forget to write your name or nickname and the place where the picture is taken (country, town, and the spot, like Eiffel Tower, Shakespeare bookshop, North Pole, or town library. Instagram: @worldbookmarkday
Who has spotted World Bookmark Day bookmarks?
Send your pics to: ifobeditor(at)gmail.com.

4.  LOCAL EVENTS:  Organize a Display and/or Bookmark Swap in Your Local Library or Bookstore

Just ask your local library to help celebrate World Bookmark Day!
As far as we know, only few libraries have organised bookmark swaps yet, and in most cases the initiative came from collectors. However, libraries are generally interested in hosting events and thus they are likely to be receptive for the idea of a bookmark swap or a display in their rooms. Offer to help in organizing the event and see what happens. It can be an exciting experience for you to discover other collectors in your area on this occasion. You can write us about a successful attempt, and we'll report about it here, if you wish also with some pictures. Such a swap report might encourage other collectors to try it as well. We are curious to hear from you. Please contact our webmaster for questions and submissions.

You can also ask libraries or bookstores if they would display bookmarks for World Bookmark Day.  You could print some of the designs on this page, make posters of copies of some in your own collection or use bookmarks from the library or bookstore.  There are many possibilities!

Another option:  Try to get an article published in a local magazine or newspaper.
1. Scott Paulson and Karen Nance, San Diego, California, USA:  Scott and Nancy have collaborated for the second year on a special event.  Nancy, librarian at the Preuss School, is holding a bookmark contest for students.  The theme is “Social Justice”.  Scott, the Exhibits and Events Coordinator at University of California, San Diego, will have a special display for the students' bookmarks in February and March along with other bookmarks on display.  He is planning a bookmark making event on 25 February in the display area of the UCSD Geisel Library.  10 January 2023   Here is information on the exhibit.  14 March 2023

2. Gintautas Deksnys, Kaunas City, Lithuania: He has been invited to several (3) creative meetings in Lithuanian cities, during which he will give away the bookmarks he created for World Bookmark Day (see above), popularizing IFOB's activities and goals. 12 January 2023
First event: My students and I volunteered by making cushions on the benches at St. Lauryn's Church, Lithuania. After the mass, I told the audience about World Bookmark Day and handed out 2 of my bookmarks.

Newspaper article about the event, "A Lesson in Kindness"
Translation of the article:
LESSON OF KINDNESS
"We, the students and teachers of the King's Mindaugas Vocational Training Center, appealing to the emotional call to being: for the Motherland, the country, the city, the town and the person, while learning to live with love for the purpose of growing and strengthening the inner "I", without obliging anyone, we ask you to accept this modest gift from us - self-made cushions on the benches", - these words are spoken by the students of the Center's Events and Recreation Services Program in 2023. January 15 Sundays of during the St. mass, gifts were presented by Skriaudžiai to the pastor Antanas Mickevičius of the St. Lauryn‘s Church..
"Everything comes from love. Even in the smallest things we put the most perfect. The path of each of us is drawn with holistic insights: through being, through giving, through acquisition and through transition - the ability to share. This lesson in kindness was shared by the founders of the campaign, vocational teachers Rūta Urbelienė and Gintautas Deksnys, together with family doctor Rūta Vilkauskiene.

Sometimes that little is all you need. And at the end, there are traditionally gifts - bookmarks, accompanying outstanding new searches and dissemination“.

Second Event:  On the occasion of the Day of the Restoration of the State of Lithuania (February 16) with children aged 5-8, we organized a creative-educational afternoon "I am Lithuanian" with the aim of making a bookmark for yourself and a friend. I will award the best authors of bookmarks on February 25

6. Vilija Jocienė on the Vilnius Book Fair: I want to share my impressions. The book fair is always full not only of impressions, but also of book marks 🙂 This year there are even 105 of them. And where else can you exchange with collectors Regina Mačiulytė and Julija Karanauskaitė Stankevičienė. Meeting at the book fair has already become a tradition for us 🙂. This year, I brought back such unique tabs as ever - with autographs, written in Japanese, one-of-a-kind, artistic and even my snapshot became a book mark 🙂 The most special one, which Ukrainian girls taught to weave only from yellow and blue ribbons, after all, last year, at the book fair, we heard this a terrible word, which is not from the history of books, but in reality it is very close - war.

Further information about bookmarks and the World Bookmark Day

You may be surprised to hear that bookmarks have accompanied books for 2000 years. This is brand new information unveiled by the research work done by members of our community, the International Friends of Bookmarks (IFOB). Details are given in the report Earliest History of Bookmarks. Before this publication, it was thought that the earliest bookmarks were used in medieval ages in European monasteries.

There was a discussion about pros and cons of launching a World Bookmark Day in our community. As a result, we started this project on 23 April 2016. Details of Woboda activities can be found on our Blog: please click the category "World Bookmark Day"
