4.  LOCAL EVENTS:  Organize a Display and/or Bookmark Swap in Your Local Library or Bookstore
Picture
Display at Bookmark Bookstore, Oakland, California, 2018
Just ask your local library to help celebrate World Bookmark Day!
As far as we know, only few libraries have organised bookmark swaps yet, and in most cases the initiative came from collectors. However, libraries are generally interested in hosting events and thus they are likely to be receptive for the idea of a bookmark swap or a display in their rooms. Offer to help in organizing the event and see what happens. It can be an exciting experience for you to discover other collectors in your area on this occasion. You can write us about a successful attempt, and we'll report about it here, if you wish also with some pictures. Such a swap report might encourage other collectors to try it as well. We are curious to hear from you. Please contact our webmaster for questions and submissions.
You can also ask libraries or bookstores if they would display bookmarks for World Bookmark Day.  You could print some of the designs on this page, make posters of copies of some in your own collection or use bookmarks from the library or bookstore.  There are many possibilities!

Another option:  Try to get an article published in a local magazine or newspaper.
1. Scott Paulson, Exhibits and Events Coordinator, University of California, San Diego Library is planning:
  • An Exhibit on bookmarks:  Bookmarks: The Constant Companion of Books for Over 2,000 Years, Feb 5, 2025–Mar 17, 2025, the Nest at Geisel Library, 2nd floor
  • A Bookmark Making event
  • Coordination with bookmarks made by the young students at the UC San Diego Preuss School
2. Gintautas Deksnys and Vilija Jociene, Lithuania  will be organizing three meetings-creative exhibitions in the cities and towns of northern Lithuania, where Gintautas will present his book to the public and give it to local libraries and individuals. During this meeting, they plan to establish a bookmark society. Gintautas was also invited to present his book at the Vilnius Book Fair.

Message from Vilija, 25 Feb 2025:  Best wishes from Lithuania's small Kaunatavas library in Telšiai district, where this day will be dedicated to celebrating the day of book marks and visitors will be treated to education, exhibitions and talks. And we start with Gintautas Deksnis' art exhibition of book marks and the book fair "Talking book tabs. Collector's audience" and we are extremely happy that we are the first to present this book. So beautiful, impressive, and bringing a lot of good emotions to the World Bookmark Day.

Update from Gintautas, 2 Mar 2025:  Vilnius Book Fair is the largest book fair in the Baltic States, one of the most prominent cultural events in Lithuania. This event, which promotes and celebrates reading, annually invites visitors from all over Lithuania to meetings with writers, book presentations, discussions, concerts, exhibitions, creative workshops and other cultural activities.

About 300 publishing houses and other cultural organizations from Lithuania and abroad participate in the fair every year, over 500 various events and concerts take place, and over 50 thousand visitors visit the fair over four days.

This year, I had the honor of participating in this fair and representing the publishing house "Vitae litera", which helped publish the author's book "Talking Book Tabs. The Collector's Audience". Representing a book is a unique respect for those who read and respect book tabs as a value.

This modest work and other expressions (exhibitions in Lithuanian regions, creative meetings) are based on photographs, dedicated to the World Bookmark Day.

  • Meeting: On February 23rd they will have a meeting to commemorate this day, in a town in the province of Barcelona, including a bookmark exchange. More information on the web site which says "This weekend, specifically on Sunday 23 February, a meeting will be held by collectors of book marks, celebrating "World Bookmark Day". It will be the 9th edition and will be held in the Sala El Celler in Sant Esteve Sesrovires, with the organization and collaboration of various associations and entities such as Contxant, El Troc, Mondopunt, the Catalan Federation of Book Mark Associations and the Sant Esteve Sesrovires City Council."  (Note: English translation used "book stitch", changed here to bookmark.)

4. Jacek Hałuszkiewicz, Chojnice, Poland, Bookmark Making, Exhibition
  • Bookmark Making Competition: I announced a competition among the students of my school for the WOBODA bookmark. This one is exceptional, which is why I wanted to present it. It was made by 17-year-old Tatiana Michałowska, a student of ZS 2 in Chojnice. As she says, she loves crocheting. You have to admit, she did a great job. The bookmark will be presented on February 25th at an exhibition at the Public Library in Chojnice. Today is the pre-premiere of this beautiful bookmark.
  • Field Game: With the support of the Municipal Library in Chojnice I am organizing a field game consisting of searching for WOBODA bookmarks. It is a popular game in my country. The bookmarks will be placed in various important places for Chojnice. There are over 50 of them. On February 24th, participants will have to find them with a map and bring them to the library on February 25th, where they will be rewarded with prizes and sweets.
  • Podcast: I will have a podcast about the game on Radio Wekkend fm, the local radio station and the local press.
  • Exhibit: On February 25th I am organizing an exhibition of bookmarks from around the world (those that I have listed now) and the winner of the competition for the WOBODA bookmark in Chojnice will be announced (I have book prizes and ... bookmarks).
  • Catalog: I invited several institutions that produce bookmarks to cooperate with me to help me create a catalog of contemporary Polish bookmarks.

Update from Jacek:  The event was visited by over 80 people of different ages. There were media and potential future friends of bookmarks. We started the opening with a big cake made by a confectionery shop especially for this event. A cake in the shape of a book, of course, with a bookmark with the inscription "The first World Bookmark Day in Chojnice".  Local media covered the event with an article, photographs, and a video.

Asim Maner Award winners, 2025: Domeñec Martinez Muñoz and Montserrat Casaponsa
Update 12 Mar 2025:
Normally, we make the award to one person, even when we have more than one nominee whose accomplishments are impressive.  It can be difficult to make a choice in those cases, so we try to look at the overall scope and impact of each person's activities.  This year, we have a different situation in that the winner, Domènec, requested that we make the award to both him and his wife and collecting partner, Montserrat Casaponsa.  As he said, "since we share the same hobby and while I am in charge of doing studies, conferences, etc., she is in charge of keeping the collection up to date and contacting collectors. We both manage the collection together, we both put together exhibitions, we go to events together, etc. I also wanted to highlight her work and say that without her, perhaps our collection would not be the same."

The judges discussed his request and decided to grant it because he makes a good case for their joint efforts.  In the future, it is preferable to make a joint nomination in the beginning so that we can evaluate the full spectrum of activity and efforts in making our decision.  Thus, this time we have added Montserrat to the award and congratulate her as well as Domènec for their partnership in spreading the word about bookmarks.

6.  BOOKMARK COLLECTION AWARD
The winner is: no entries this year.
This  award recognizes an outstanding collection based on the subject of the collection or the format of materials, whether the collection has been recognized by other organizations, or whether you have written about it or promoted it in some other way. The criteria to be considered include:

  • How extensive is the description and documentation of the collection
  • Whether there are publications, presentations, exhibits, or internet/social media activities to provoke recognition and reactions
The IFOB co-editors will decide the winner who will receive
  • a certificate (mailed dd mmm 2025)
  • special prize: a copy of Essays on Bookmarks and Related Topics, by Frank X. Roberts or Asim Maner's Earliest History of Bookmarks (mailed dd mmm 2025).
  • other donations tbd
The winner will also be featured in an article on the IFOB blog.
Submit your entry by February 20, 2025 to the webmaster.

Further information about bookmarks and the World Bookmark Day

You may be surprised to hear that bookmarks have accompanied books for 2000 years. This is brand new information unveiled by the research work done by members of our community, the International Friends of Bookmarks (IFOB). Details are given in the report Earliest History of Bookmarks. Before this publication, it was thought that the earliest bookmarks were used in medieval ages in European monasteries.

There was a discussion about pros and cons of launching a World Bookmark Day in our community. As a result, we started this project on 23 April 2016. Details of Woboda activities can be found on our Blog: please click the category "World Bookmark Day"
