We celebrate the readers' little helper and the ever faithful companion of books for 2000 years.

Do you like, collect or produce bookmarks? Join us to spread the word about this worldwide event!

We continue to celebrate World Bookmark Day to bring attention to bookmarks, the quiet companion of readers. Friends who love to use bookmarks while reading, friends who love to collect bookmarks, illustrate and produce bookmarks, who write blogs, articles, and books on bookmarks, friends who take care of them in libraries and museums, and some other unknown friends. Join us in our activities if you think you are a friend of bookmarks. The WOBODA is an excellent occasion to help bookmarks get the recognition they deserve.   See what happened last year for WOBODA 2019.

Join one of the activities listed below (printable designs, raffle and more) and help us. Please do spread the word about WOBODA and subscribe to our newsletter to receive the latest news on the activities.

Are you surprised to hear that bookmarks have accompanied books for 2000 years already? Read more here.
LIST OF ACTIVITIES
Join us with one of the activities listed below and be part of the World Bookmark Day
1. YOU ARE AN ILLUSTRATOR OR ARTIST? CREATE A FREE PRINTABLE BOOKMARK FOR THE WOBODA 2020
Submit a free printable bookmark design (uncompressed jpeg, 200 x 75 mm, RGB mode) for this page. Please add the following text anywhere on your design:
World Bookmark Day (or just Woboda)
25 February 2020
www.ifobookmarks.org/woboda.
Suggestions:  1) Size the bookmark to print 3 or 4 on a standard page; 2) Use a solid color background or a border to make bookmarks easier to cut from a printed page.
Include Your Name - Your status (collector, artist, designer) from (your country) - your web site or social media.  You may also add this information to the design.  Thank you!
Free Printable Bookmarks for the World Bookmark Day
How to use these bookmarks?

Download and print your favorite bookmark. Tip:  Copy the image into a Word (or other word processing) document and copy it several times to fit the page (see examples of files for each design below).  You can then print multiple copies onto card stock.

Once you have a Woboda bookmark, keep one with you when you travel or go around and make a picture of the bookmark alone or together with you at different places.

Send us the pictures for publication here on this page per email: please do not forget to write the name of the place and your name or your nickname (see also point 2. below).
Please respect the copyright of the artists: bookmarks are free to use for private purposes only. If you publish pictures of the bookmarks on internet, please do not remove the credits. Thank you.
3 Things You Can Do With Woboda Bookmarks
After you download and print the designs for World Bookmark Day, here are 3 things you can do with them:
1.  Leave bookmarks at a Little Free Library near you.
2. Send one of them with birthday, Christmas or other greeting cards to friends and relatives.
3. Ask your local used bookstore if they would like copies to distribute.  And ask them if they find bookmarks left behind in donated or acquired books.  Maybe they will give you a few.

2.  SEND WOBO - THE WORLD TRAVELING BOOKMARK - ON A JOURNEY AND HELP HER
     TO ACCOMPLISH HER MISSION
Picture

On the left you see WOBO - the World Traveling Bookmark

WOBO goes places on a mission to help her bookmark friends to get the recognition they deserve. The task of Wobo is to spread the word about this year's WORLD BOOKMARK DAY - on 25 February 2020.  [Note that Wobo is now generic with no date and can be used any time.]

It is a very difficult task, actually, because only very few people know about this event yet. You can help Wobo a lot to accomplish her duty, if you wish. And how?

Just download and print some copies of the Wobo bookmark. Then leave the bookmarks in a book, at a library or coffee shop or whatever place you think is fine for this purpose. The finders of your bookmarks are supposed to report their discovery on this page and do the same as you. Wobo visited many places last year--where will she go this time?

Join the mission and help Wobo!  Thank you!

Where are you from and where have you found a Wobo? What was your reaction? What do you like about bookmarks? What are you going to do with Wobo? Are you letting her go, or keep her and send a new Wobo on journey? We'd love to hear from you!

Write an email to our webmaster, she'll put your answers on this page. Thank you.

10 Things You Can Do If You Win the Woboda Raffle
You may wonder what you would do with so many bookmarks so here are some suggestions:
1. Add the ones you like to your collection, of course!
2. Use some to swap with others on our Swap page.  You will probably find many that match the interests of other collectors.
3. Give some as gifts (or stocking stuffers for the holidays) to friends and family who like to read.
4. Use them as gift tags: if the back is blank, you can add a To/From or greeting message.
5. Give some to your local library to give away.  Perhaps there will be some that would appeal to children, especially.
6. Give some to your local used book store.  They can give them away to customers.
7. Make a display for your local library to show the variety of bookmarks around the world.
8. Include one with greeting cards you send for birthdays, holidays, other occasions.
9. Make an advent calendar with a surprise bookmark revealed each day.  The idea of the advent calendar can be used as a countdown for other events, if you do not celebrate Christmas.
10. Turn them into art: frame bookmarks with a theme or interesting graphics, or make a collage.

What are your ideas?  And remember, you have a very good chance of winning the raffle.  Due to the formula used, the winner is not just the person with the most tickets.  Enter now!

🎁🎁🎁   The winning ticket number is 46! - This ticket belongs to the winner of the World Bookmark Day Raffle 2020    🎁🎁🎁
The winner is Kerrie More, USA . Congratulations!

As with the first Woboda, we decided that the bookmarks submitted by the winner will be given to a second place winner to prevent the winner from getting his/her own bookmarks back. The second place winner will also get a donation of bookmarks from the Vilnius, Lithuania Book Fair donated by Regina Mačiulytė (mailed 4 March 2020), The second winner is the participant next to the winner, as declared before. This means:

🎁    The Second Place Winner of the Raffle is Jonathan Xuereb, Malta!   🎁

The process for determining the winner of the raffle
All participants will be asked for an individual number between 1 and 99. Whereas all participants know their own number, they don't know the numbers of the other participants. At the end we will sum up all the individual numbers of the participants and will have a sum number. Let say that sum is 348. We have a certain number of raffle tickets at the end and each participant owns a part of the raffle tickets.

Here's an example to illustrate: let's say we have 8 participants and they have together 37 raffle tickets. The number of the winning ticket will be calculated by the following formula:
t = 348 / 37 = 9.40541 - 9 = 0.40541 x 37 = 15    The ticket numbers are given in the order of the participants' joining date. In our case, participant 1 has two tickets, no 1 and 2, participant 2 has 3 ticket (ticket number 3, 4, and 5), participant 3 has 2 tickets (ticket number 6 and 7) etc. There is only one exception in the calculation: if the calculation gives 0 that means the highest ticket number, in our case ticket number 51.

Well, this sounds rather complicated, however, it is completely verifiable and there is no chance of manipulating it by anybody. The lot is drawn by the participants themselves so to speak! All new participants should send along a photograph their bookmarks also an individual number between 1 and 99.

In order to prevent the winner from getting back his/her own bookmarks, the bookmarks of the winner will be given to a second winner. The second winner is the participant next to the winner according to the joining date (in this case we made it easy as the winning ticket is already determined). In case the winner is the last joining participant, the second winner is then the the first participant according to this logic.

Shipping and Mailing: The shipping costs for sending the bookmarks to the winner  are covered by you, and we are not liable if your bookmarks get lost in the mail. We recommend that you send them with a record or tracking of the shipment.
Shipping address for your bookmarks:   IFOB Raffle, [winner to be announced 25 February 2020]
Remember to enclose your name and email address when you send your bookmarks.

RAFFLE NEWS

We don't know, of course, how many bookmarks there will be in the raffle pot at the end. However, we will inform about the incoming bookmarks with a picture each time and the total number of bookmarks pledged. Thus the development of the prize bookmarks can be followed on this page.

Please do spread the word about the raffle, and invite your friends to join in. The winning prize will increase with the number of players. We wish good luck to all participants.

Photos, number of bookmarks, and participants will be listed here by date entered.

Send your pics to: ifobeditor(at)gmail.com.

5.  LOCAL EVENTS:  Organize a Display and/or Bookmark Swap in Your Local Library or Bookstore

Just ask your local library to help celebrate World Bookmark Day!

As far as we know, only few libraries have organised bookmark swaps yet, and in most cases the initiative came from collectors. However, libraries are generally interested in hosting events and thus they are likely to be receptive for the idea of a bookmark swap or a display in their rooms. Offer to help in organizing the event and see what happens. It can be an exciting experience for you to discover other collectors in your area on this occasion. You can write us about a successful attempt, and we'll report about it here, if you wish also with some pictures. Such a swap report might encourage other collectors to try it as well. We are curious to hear from you. Please contact our webmaster for questions and submissions.

You can also ask libraries or bookstores if they would display bookmarks for World Bookmark Day.  You could print some of the designs on this page, make posters of copies of some in your own collection or use bookmarks from the library or bookstore.  There are many possibilities!

Another option:  Try to get an article published in a local magazine or newspaper.
This year's events:
Congratulations to everyone on International Bookmarks Day. This year we organized an exhibition of bookmarks of handmade books at the Kaunatava Bible Library in Lithuania. They were made by pupils of Simonas Daukantas Papile Gymnasium (teacher Dalia Sakalauskienė) from Vilija Jocienė, Lithuania, 25 February 2020

7.  DONATE TO PROMOTE THE WORLD BOOKMARK DAY

Your donations of prizes, bookmarks for the raffle, or money will be used to promote the World Bookmark Day. We would like to support the Asim Maner award for promoting bookmarks and any future contests. There are also mailing fees for the raffle and printing fees for printing downloadable bookmarks.  Even $5 is a fantastic donation for this purpose.  Please use the donate button, or contact the webmaster to donate prizes or bookmarks.

If we get more donations as needed for the prizes, we'll use them to promote the World Bookmark Day with additional activities. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

8.  Join us as a sponsor if you are a person, company, or society with a relation to reading, books, and
       bookmarks

Sponsors can join us with a donation of funds to promote World Bookmark Day activities. We also welcome other possibilities of cooperation with our sponsors, including donation of bookmarks or other prizes. Sponsors will be portrayed on this page with their relation to reading, books and bookmarks, and with special activities initiated by them. For more information, please contact our webmaster.

Further information about bookmarks and the World Bookmark Day

You may be surprised to hear that bookmarks have accompanied books for 2000 years. This is brand new information unveiled by the research work done by members of our community, the International Friends of Bookmarks (IFOB). Details are given in the report Earliest History of Bookmarks. Before this publication, it was thought that the earliest bookmarks were used in medieval ages in European monasteries.

There was a discussion about pros and cons of launching a World Bookmark Day in our community. As a result, we started this project on 23 April 2016. Details of Woboda activities can be found on our Blog: please click the category "World Bookmark Day"
